~* Corner of My Home *~

Edited: Second Picture added to this post on Monday, October 1st.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
It is Sunday evening and I am finally feeling 100% better....Again, I can't thank you enough for your get well wishes and prayers! It's good to be back posting again.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
I thought I'd give you a little glimpse into our main bathroom. I just love signs and letters...when I came across these letters in a clearance pile at Target I knew what I wanted to do with them. I found them for less than $1.50 each. I'm not sure if I'm going to paint them or not. (My dh pointed out to me that they're not all pure white.) This is all of the decorating that I have done so far in this bathroom and it was remodeled almost a year ago. Once I get the cabinet painted and hung I'll be sure and post a picture of that.

I decided to add this second picture give you a little better view. This sink was put in the farmhouse when it was remodeled in the early 60's. DH and I decided that we still really liked it. The only thing we changed were the fixtures.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
I was tagged by Oak Wind Farm and Daffodil Hill to list Seven Random Things about myself....thank you for thinking of me ladies! I have participated in this previously so here is the link to read them: Seven Random Things
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
I was also tagged by Marie of A Little Bit of Country on the Shore to do a middle name meme, but I'm still working on it! Now that I'm feeling better I can hopefully get this completed.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Thank you to Susan, Julie, Brenda, Heidi, Marie, Abbie, My Heart Is Always Home, Dena,
Pattie, Ellen B, Becky, Robin, LittlePenPen, Lizzie, Lynda, Esther, Manuela, Shirlee, Rhoda, LaTeaDah, Jenny, Renee B, and Kari and Kijsa for leaving me such sweet comments on my post about my recent yard sale treasures.

cityofoceanshores.com Update 09.2007

Real Estate Update
Hey everyone. It's a strange time in real estate out here on the beach. Some days the phone won't ring, unless it's a seller wanting to know why nothing's going on and then another day the phone won't stop and buyers are tripping over each other trying to find something. Such is real estate on the beach. Now that summer is over, however, it does feel like things are picking up and that's most likely because buyers who aren't out here on vacation are generally serious about buying something. Other than that, the entire North Beach area is still booming with new construction be it homes, condos or major developments.

* The Penthouse is underway!
Looking for some class down here at the beach? This developer from the Seattle area is putting together the finest condo project in Ocean Shores. Only drawback? He's only building a total of four units. The marketing comments are as follows: "It took a lot of bubble wrap but we found four of the Ritziest Manhattan Penthouses and shipped them out of the smog and onto the heavenly Washington Coast (the doorman was union so he stayed). Placed seaside along the Pacific Ocean, the Penthouses are like no other vacation home. Breathtaking views and luxury amenities make The Penthouses your escape from reality. Exceptional design and unprecedented attention to detail in every aspect & square inch! Live & entertain in STYLE!" Click HERE to see the listing info.

Proud new Seabrook homeowners have discovered what many beach loving folks are quickly finding out... Seabrook is a truly unique and special place, unlike any other beach destination on the Washington coast! As summer gives way to spectacular fall colors, Seabrook is enjoying a record year of sales and growth with total sales nearing $50 million dollars! Progress continues on Seabrook's first retail establishment, Café Tashtego as well as the beautiful amphitheater which boasts stunning views of the ocean! News
* Ocean Shores Clam Population is up! "Overall razor clam populations are down from last year, and the news is mixed," said Dan Ayres, the head state Fish and Wildlife coastal shellfish biologist. "Some beaches are up and some are down. Kalaloch has had a real decrease, and we won't be offering any harvest there." Marine toxin levels on all beaches were virtually non-existent. State Fish & Wildlife is currently conducting public meetings for input on the upcoming razor clam season. As soon as the season is announced, it will be published on http://www.cityofoceanshores.com/.

* Ocean Shores is winning the Weed Battle! After only four months of treatment, the city's freshwater weed eradication program is getting rave reviews from city officials and residents. Miles of canals that were previously inaccessible are now open for boat traffic. Fishing conditions throughout the 23 miles of fresh waterways are improving, and more tourists are renting boats for afternoon cruises. The city's trademark canals fell victim to invasive weeds such as Brazilian elodea and Eurasian milfoil after years of failed maintenance programs. Last spring, the City Council authorized a $400,000 herbicidal treatment program that has killed more than 95 percent of the problem weeds, according to Public Works Director Ken Lanfear. "The result has been more than pleasing," he said. "This canal system we've got here is unique for the Pacific Northwest, and it's a resource that we want to maintain and protect."-the Daily World

* Don't Do This! A couple drove their RV "way, way out onto the beach at low tide and got stuck," according to Gary Murdoch, the chief at Fire District 8, which covers the Pacific Beach area. The couple parked their motor home Monday night to go for a walk with their dog. When the motor home didn't start up again, they went to bed only to be awoken to the home being rocked by the surf. A Coast Guard swimmer from the Astoria-based helicopter rescued the couple and their dog at around 2 a.m., Scott said. There wasn't much concern about the RV being sucked out to sea because the backend became bogged down in the surf as a result of the tidal action. The couple later had the RV towed away.

Dear Friends, My heart is deeply touched by all of your concern, your well wishes and your prayers. I'm not sure what type of bug I had/have but it was/is a tough little bugger! As of Thursday, September 27th, I'm starting to feel a little bit better, but not quite 100% yet.

Ocean Shores winning weed battle

After only four months of treatment, the city’s freshwater weed eradication program is getting rave reviews from city officials and residents.

Miles of canals that were previously inaccessible are now open for boat traffic. Fishing conditions throughout the 23 miles of fresh waterways are improving, and more tourists are renting boats for afternoon cruises.

The city’s trademark canals fell victim to invasive weeds such as Brazilian elodea and Eurasian milfoil after years of failed maintenance programs. Last spring, the City Council authorized a $400,000 herbicidal treatment program that has killed more than 95 percent of the problem weeds, according to Public Works Director Ken Lanfear.

“The result has been more than pleasing,” he said. “This canal system we’ve got here is unique for the Pacific Northwest, and it’s a resource that we want to maintain and protect.”

450 acres treated
Beginning in April, Northwest Aquatic Eco-Systems Inc. treated parts of the canals with diquat, a fast-acting herbicide. Duck Lake was treated with fluoridone, an herbicide that works more slowly, ensuring that all the weeds didn’t sink to the bottom, creating an oxygen-starved zone as they decay.

The treatments continued throughout the summer, and one last application is scheduled for October to take care of some expected fall growth.

With more than 450 surface acres of treated water, the Ocean Shores project is the largest freshwater treatment program in the state this year, Lanfear said.

“Now we’ll have to talk to the council about finding some money to maintain the program ... and that might be difficult,” Lanfear said. Since the canals are part of the city’s storm drain system, maintenance funds would come from the city’s storm drain utility fund, which is already strapped for cash.

With more room to roam, motorized boats have been exploring the uncharted territory of the Grand Canal’s offshoots, known as the Bell Canal and the Bass Canal.

Nancy Kimzey of the Ocean Sores Electric Boat Co. said her business is much improved.

“People are renting more boats, but they spend less time on the water because they don’t have to stop and put the engine in reverse to spin off the weeds,” she said. “It’s just so much nicer to be out on the water now. We’ve been in the Bell Canal two or three times now, and it’s in great shape.”

Without weeds to snag lines and cloud the water, fishing in the waterways has improved.

“There’s been a real improvement in fishing, especially on the waterways of the Grand Canal,” according to Bob Rhoades, president of the Ocean Shores Fresh Waterway Corp., an all-volunteer group dedicated to protecting the fresh waterways.

“This should have been done a long time ago, and we can’t hit it once and forget about it for another 10 years,” he added.

Even the state Department of Fish & Wildlife has noticed the improvement, and has pledged to plant more fish next spring.

“They’ve looked at what we did here, and the result is a commitment to at least double trout plantings,” Lanfear said. “I think we’re going to develop a first-class year-round fishery here.”

Both Lanfear and Rhoades said the city must now look for more public access to the canals and lakes.

The city restored a fishing dock at the south end of the Grand Canal, and built a new access point on Lake Minard. Lanfear said he’s looking at both sides of the Weatherwax property, which straddles Duck Lake, for more public access.

“If we can develop a trail system in the Weatherwax to give us access to the bank of Duck Lake, we could have prime spots for people to fish off the bank,” the Public Works director said.

~* Yard Sale Treasures *~

I had a good treasure hunt this past Saturday...I found this mirror for $5.00. On the back it says it was manufatured by Pittsburgh Plate Glass, October 1941. I fell in love with it when I first saw it. I wasn't exactly sure where I could hang it, but I decided to get it anyways. After I got it home I decided to hang it at the top of the stairs. I also found this great little table for $3.00. I almost forgot to take a "before" picture of it so as you can see it was yellow and I decided to paint it pale green. I've been wanting a small table in the master bedroom to use as a coffee table. My husband thought I should have left it there since it does have a crooked leg, but I think it gives it character. The sweet older couple that I bought the mirror and table from told me they were downsizing. They had lived in a farmhouse but were moving to something smaller.
I bought this picture frame at a yard sale back in May for .50 cents. The first time I saw it I knew I wanted it for my chalkboard. I found chalkboard paint, but never found the type of board that would be lightweight...I was about to give up hope when dh, dd and I found a chalkboard at Staples that would fit inside it. My dh just hung it up in our kitchen, but now I don't have any chalk!
I also bought these lidded glass jars on Saturday. The larger jar was .75 cents...the smaller one was .25 cents. I had gone to another yard sale and found these great old wooden thread spools. They were .10 cents each. The buttons belonged to my dear Gram.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Julie, now I'm sorry that I didn't buy the rest of the spools...I could have sent them to you! I'll keep an eye out for them again.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Terri and Bob...thank you...I really do try to respond to questions because I want everyone to know that I read what they have to say.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Abbie, thank you, too! I honestly can say that I am no authority on painting furniture. My method is to clean the piece of furniture with Murphy's Oil soap, let it dry and just start painting. I know that one should scrape the loose paint if there is any, but I never bother...I say the shabbier the better! If any one knows of the proper way to paint furniture could you please let me know so I can post a link? Thanks!
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Shirlee, I can honestly say that I have better luck at thrift stores than at yard sales. I always get something from a thrift store, but yard sales really are hit or miss.

Thank you all for your kind comments regarding my recent yard sale/thrifting finds. I really appreciate them!
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Julie and Manuela wanted to know where I find my treasures, well, I mostly find them at thrift stores. We have a great Salvation Army in my area that has very reasonable prices. I also have been fortunate to go to some yard sales this year that had some great items.
Becky wanted to know if the picture of the cabinet is the one I talked about previously. Yes, it is. I was so happy when I found it because it's exactly the size I needed. I still haven't gotten it painted yet because I was busy with another painting project.
Abbie, if I ever decided to get rid of the cabinet, you'll be the first to know! I can't wait to see what you're going to post about on your blog. I love seeing what others find!
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
My dear friend June and I went to several yard sales last Saturday. I came away with a small table (that's what I was busy painting), a mirror, two small glass lided jars, and wooden thread spools. I'm hoping to post some pictures within the next several days.
My dh also managed to get my chalkboard finished...now it has to be hung in the kitchen...can't wait to show you the results!
Much love to you all, Kim

~*Some New Goodies*~

I'd like to share some of my recent finds with you...I was fortunate enough to find this great 1936 My Better Homes and Gardens Cookbook for a $1! It still had a few handwritten recipe cards inside. I knew I had to bring it home with me.
The cabinet will be going into our 2nd floor bathroom. I'm going to paint it white. I found it for $4.00. I just love this glass jar...I'm going to fill it pine cones or who knows what else!
I haven't decided where I'm going to put the two candle holders, but I do know I'm going to paint them black...they were .99 cents for the set. The old grater will be turned upside down to hold flowers, etc. in my kitchen. Not sure what I'll do with the little glass jar, but it was .49 cents so I couldn't pass it up. Can't wait to sit down and look at the Laura Ashley Style book. I'm not sure what I'll do with the wallpaper...maybe I'll use it to wrap a gift or line a cupboard...maybe there's enough to do both!
I got this shadow box for .25 cents, but I'm going to paint it and use it for another project that has been on my mind. This milk glass dish will be used in the 2nd floor bathroom, also. It has taken me sooooooo long to even decide how I want to decorate this bathroom. It will soon be a year since it was remodeled.

Thanks for taking a look at my finds...have a great weekend. I have plans to go to a few sales this weekend...can't wait to see what treasures are out there!
Thanks again for always taking the time to stop by and for your nice comments...I do appreciate them.
Much love to you all, Kim

~* More Kitchen Pics *~

Welcome to an up close and personal look at some of the things that are in my kitchen:
I bought this scale at a yard sale...I've wanted one for so long and I just couldn't pass it up; a courting candle from my dear friend Josie; this miniature cookstove was given to me by my dear Gram.
A basket of flowers (flowers from Home and Garden Party); goose bought at Fort Ligonier Days several years ago with one of my dear Gram's pie pans behind it; bean pots and pitcher that also belonged to my dear Gram; a crock that also belonged to my dear Gram.
I got these two needle point pictures at a yard sale in the spring. The frames were different colors so I decided to give them a black crackle finish.

I bought these three little sheep that say "Live Well, Love Much, Laugh Often" and the little tree last fall at Christmas In The Woods in Ohio; my star lamp; miniature oil lamp.

This large coffee pot was found in the attic of the home where I grew up. I have no idea who it belonged to. It has a hole near the bottom so I'm sure that is why it was put up in the attic. I'm so glad it wasn't thrown away; the off-white enamelware cup sat on the sink in my parent's kitchen.

I picked up this cut glass pitcher for $2.00 at a thrift store. I decided to use it for my cooking utensils. This small yellow enamelware creamer belonged to my dear Gram.

I hope you've enjoyed this up close and personal look at some of things that are near and dear to my heart. Thanks once again for taking the time to stop by...I appreciate it so much.

Much love to you all, Kim

~* Kitchen Tour *~

Thanks for stopping by, won't you please come in?
If you look straight ahead you can see the kitchen...one of the first things you'll notice is my large pantry. It's great for storage since I don't have a lot of counter space even though I have a nice sized kitchen.
I just love my black appliances...I'm adding more and more black touches to the kitchen. I love this little piece of furniture...can you guess what's inside? It's where I hide my garbage can. This was made by the Amish. My hutch is also Amish made. I store cookbooks in this hutch.
See my new sign...I found it this weekend. This is the table where some of my Gooseberry Patch cookbooks are stored. This table belonged to my dear parents.
Where the meals are prepared each night. The double oven is a great feature.
This is my favorite wall in the kitchen. The wreath was one of the first things I purchased for the farmhouse when we moved in. The plates are from Marshall's. The little table holds the rest of my Gooseberry Patch cookbooks.
And last, but not least, the table my dear husband and I purchased 17 years ago when we were first married.
I hope you enjoyed the tour of my kitchen...thanks again for stopping by!

~* Thank U's and ?'s Answered *~

Hello friends, I'm sorry for the lack of posting and for not answering several questions that were asked regarding my last post. This has been a very busy week. I've been working on getting things cleaned and organized at our home. I've taken four bags of clothing that we no longer needed to a local charity. It feels good to let go of some clothing I've been holding on to way too long!
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Wow, I am over-whelmed by the number of you sweet readers who have been leaving me comments....I'm even thankful for those of you who have stopped by and haven't ever said Hi...don't be shy, let me know you've been by! When I started this blog I honestly didn't think there would be anyone, besides a few of my friends, who would be interested in seeing what I'm doing around here...Thank you all from the bottom of my heart!
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Questions Answered:
Abbie wanted to know how I accomplished my mantel. First off, I looked through tons of magazines to find pictures of mantels so I would have an idea what I might like. Honestly, all of the credit really goes to our friend, Fran. I showed him pictures and told him what I wanted and that is what he came up with. He did all of the measuring, figuring, building, etc. He is one talented man!
Carolyn wanted to know if any of the logs in our home were visible. Unfortunately they are not. They only time I actually got to view them was when the windows were being replaced. I often wonder who built this home...I hope they know how much I love it here!
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Unfortunately I do not have any pictures to post today. I'm planning on either doing a kitchen tour or showing you more outside pictures....hmmm, I guess you'll have to check back and see what I've chosen!
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Have a great day!
